On-Call Time
Being “on call”—This term applies to time in which the employee is required to remain either on the employer’s premises or close by enough to be available to return to the duties and responsibilities of work. When an employee is on call, he or she is not able to use that time effectively for personal purposes. An employee is not “on call” if he or she is merely required to leave word as to where to be reached. Whether or not “on call” time is compensable depends on the circumstances of each situation.
